Welcome to DCummings Law LLC, a Delaware Law Firm focusing on three practice areas: business litigation, real estate transactions and wills, trusts and estate planning.
This Law Firm was started in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, with the courageous idea that the legal industry must adapt to meet the changing needs of our Society. For those wish to work with a well-experienced Attorney, who has a sense of integrity, and wish to be treated with personal service, you may be in the right place.
The founder of this Law Firm, Douglas J. Cummings, Jr., Esquire, became motivated by the spirit of service and a desire for progress from a young age.
After College but before becoming an Attorney, Mr. Cummings was stationed abroad as a Coordinator of International Relations, where he intermediated and strengthened the relationship between Japanese and American sister cities. Then, he created website content and negotiated contractual relationships for an international technology company in the education field. During Law School, Mr. Cummings worked part-time and explored the three different sectors of legal employment: government (Attorney General’s Office), private law firm (Intellectual Property) and in-house corporate counsel (Alcohol Distributor). Among other academic achievements, Mr. Cummings was selected and participated in the esteemed White Collar Crime Mock Trial Invitational at Georgetown University School of Law.
As an Attorney, Mr. Cummings served as a Law Clerk, twice, to a former Judge of the Superior Court, New Castle County, State of Delaware, where he researched and wrote draft opinions resolving complex commercial issues. Articles he has co-authored, authored and edited have appeared in multiple publications. In practice, Mr. Cummings has represented Clients as both Plaintiffs and Defendants, and has appeared before both State and Federal Courts. Mr. Cummings has conducted Trials before the Court of Chancery and other Courts, and presented oral argument before the Supreme Court of the State of Delaware, the Court of Last Resort in the First State.
Mr. Cummings’ introduction to Real Estate is credited to his Father, who was a real estate agent, then modest developer. Thanks to his Father, Mr. Cummings not only attended a Sheriff’s Sale at a young age, but swung the hammer and framed houses that would later become the homes of his neighbors. At earlier points in his career, Mr. Cummings worked solely as a Real Estate Attorney, conducting nothing but closings. When interest rates were very low, Mr. Cummings would perform up to three closings in a single day. But, that practice area, by itself, he found not sufficiently stimulating.
Mr. Cummings became exposed to estate planning through volunteering with a Delaware non-profit organization. Seeing first-hand the impact that estate planning has in the lives of others, Mr. Cummings pursued additional education and related experience, adding this practice area to his repertoire. He not only enjoys drafting foundational documents, but has expanded his practice into drafting certain types of Trusts that help Clients achieve more advanced objectives. Mr. Cummings enjoys representing Clients who are personal representatives, assisting them navigate the probate process before the Register of Wills Office. Mr. Cummings also takes great professional pleasure in representing Clients applying for Guardianships of Family Members, who are in need of protection because of advanced age or medical conditions.
In his free time, Mr. Cummings enjoys reading, music, not-terribly-far distance running, drawing in pencil, spending time with his Family, being walked by their two dogs and traveling to the East.
